November is Hip Hop History Month

November is Hip Hop History Month and Sisters of the Desert Sun will be celebrating the female pioneers of Hip Hop culture including Sha Rock, Lady B, M.C. Lyte, Miss Melodie, Monie Love, Queen Latifah, Mercedes Ladies, Bahamadia, and so many more.  Sisters are invited to bring the music or poetry of their favorite pioneering artist, or a book exploring the impact of women on the industry.

Over the next few weeks we'll be posting some of our favorite female classics on our Facebook page.  I got a kick out of hearing Mercedes Ladies live at the T-Connection.  That was my spot!  It was a real trek from Brooklyn to Gun Hill Road, but it was worth it.

Here are some of the titles we’ll be sharing this month:  Bling:  The History of Hip Hop Jewelry by Reggie Osse; Just My Take: A Book of Poetry and Words of Wisdom by M.C. Lyte; Put on Your Crown by Queen Latifah; and Luminary Icon… The Story of Hip Hop’s First Female MC/Rapper by MC Sha Rock, Iesha Brown.

Other opportunities to explore Hip Hop history include  The National Museum of Hip Hop http://hiphopmuseum.org, Hip-Hop Photo Museum http://hiphopphotomuseum.com/, and The Combat Jack Show http://thecombatjackshow.com,
