Sisters of the Desert Sun - Women's History Month Selections

Sisters of the Desert Sun has shared so many wonderful moments over the past 10 years.  Our time together each year during Women's History Month has inspired, encourage, motivated us to be our best and most authentic selves.  Here is our list of selections for March since we started reading together.

The Country Under My Skin by Gioconda Belli; Women of Sand and Myrhh by Hanan al Shaykh; Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter  by Adeline Yen Mah; The Known World by Edward P. Jones; Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered, Smart-Ass, or Why You Should Never Carry a Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office by Jen Lancaster; A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer edited by Eve Ensler; The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity and Love by bell hooks; Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie

My favorite was Gioconda Belli's The Country Under My Skin.  Belli's personal story of her transition from housewife to Sandinista was the quintessential  'girl power' story and a testament to the power of the word.  I stopped to think about how many poets, painters, performers used their art to make a difference socially, politically.  Belli's work remains on my personal list of must reads.  What was your favorite over the years?  We'd love to know.  Visit us on Facebook, Goodreads, Twitter or email us at sistersofthedesertsun@gmail.com.
