January 2018 SDS Responds to The MeToo Movement with Eve Ensler's "A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer"

As members of Sisters of the Desert Sun, our shared experience as women allows us to network, celebrate triumph and tragedy, support each other and offer unspoken understanding when words are not enough.  Over the past several months we have watched the list of public figures responsible for sexual harassment and/or misconduct grow exponentially.  What struck us as a group were some of the public reactions that appeared surprised or unaware that sexual violence - harassment - misconduct toward women is an ongoing and systemic problem across this nation and around the world.

In our estimation, one of the most powerful books to raise awareness on this issue is Eve Ensler's anthology, "A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer".  This collection made our reading list some years back but was so well received and so impactful we decided to revisit this work.  While some of the entries are difficult to read because of the descriptive content, we found it profoundly important to share.

Before we can change anything, we must be aware.  "A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer" brings such awareness and lends its voice to those muted by fear, institutional sexism and legal systems that victimize the victims.  We are grateful for the courage of the men and women who contributed to this body of work.  Their strength may encourage others who may be suffering in silence to find their voice and be heard.
