Sisters of the Desert Sun Spring Recap

Sisters of the Desert Sun had an exciting spring.  Filled with author events, book festivals and plays, we kept ourselves busy.  In February, SDS attended the Herberger Theater's production of Hour of Decision by Larissa Brewington.  The play chronicles the events surrounding Daisy Bates' role in integrating Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957.

March was a great time for a road trip.  SDS attended the Tucson Book Festival.  This annual, two-day festival attracts 130,000 fellow book lovers and gives attendees access to a staggering number of authors representing every genre you could think of.  If you didn't make this year, you will want to attend in 2017.

We hit the jackpot in April with a reading and discussion with Zadie Smith and a book launch party for Xu Xi.  It is a thrilling experience to meet the authors who bring insight, wisdom and laughter into our lives.

For June, we will join the Arizona Caribbean Cultural Association for their Anancy Festival at the Desert Broom Library.  The festival celebrates the oral tradition, folklore and storytelling born in West Africa and enjoyed throughout the diaspora.  With a focus on Anansi the Spider, this festival is a great way to promote literacy while having a whole lot of fun.  Anancy Festivals take place across the country.  Find out when this festival will be in a city near you.  You won't want to miss it.

There are so many exciting literary events coming up.  I look forward to experiencing them with you. For information about what's on our agenda, reading list and more, please visit us on Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads or email us at sistersofthedesertsun@gmail.com.
