"Hidden Figures" SDS Pick for January 2017
Soaring high in 2017, Sisters of the Desert Sun
began the year with "Hidden Figures" by Margot Lee Shetterly.
Remembering moon pies and Tang, members engaged in a passionate discussion
about public education, girls in STEM and the importance of community.
Shetterly's historical account of the black women mathematicians who were
instrumental in the success of the NASA moon landing inspired us to seek ways
to make a difference in the lives of school aged girls. Members discussed
the absence in movies and television of the depiction of black communities
where the pursuit and encouragement of education is commonplace. Shetterly's
book offered that this was the norm. "Hidden Figures" started
our year off on a positive note and allowed us all to renew our commitments to
community involvement and promoting girls in STEM.
