Sisters of the Desert Sun chose "The Secret
Book of Frida Kahlo" by F.G. Haghenbeck for our May selection to coincide
with the Heard Museum's "Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera" exhibit.
It was the perfect setting.
Haghenbeck's biography of Frida Kahlo includes
writings and recipes found in one of her many journals recently
uncovered. Bringing to life the strength and courage of her childhood,
and the agony of her final days, Haghenbeck brought members of SDS closer to
knowing Frida and embracing this amazing icon.
At the Heard, members sat in the crafts room and made sunflowers to
add to an immense sunflower garden that greeted attendees at the exhibit
entrance. The exhibit brought Haghenbeck's story of Frida to life.
Through the exhibit we were able to experience Frida's love for Diego and
strength as a woman. Her paintings, pencil sketches, self-portraits are
remarkable, and our discovery of the depth of her physical and emotional pain
were absolutely profound.
